Our Projects
We support a more definitive approach and pathway to cancer care. This is based on data that highlights, for instance, that despite breast cancer being the most prevalent cancer in Nigeria, there is insufficient access to its care, and many patients have advanced stages of the disease.
Our ongoing project, in conjunction with local teams in Teaching Hospitals in Nigeria, was carefully adapted to promote improved productivity, decrease the time to diagnosis and start of treatment, and support increased efficiency. It would also ensure a consistent multidisciplinary approach to cancer care as an integrated clinic, with breast cancer as the initial focus.
We aim to adapt an innovative approach to breast cancer management in Nigerian tertiary hospitals, with the goal of improving the process and outcomes of cancer care through the establishment of Integrated Cancer Clinics.
These integrated clinics would include a one-stop clinic for diagnosis, Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) evaluation, and facilitated treatment initiation, all under a dedicated clinic. Regular internal and external cancer awareness and education campaigns, nurse-led clinics for advice, and ongoing education would be incorporated into this program.
This intervention has the potential to improve patients' journeys from presentation to treatment and streamline care, targeting needs and resources while reducing the burden of cancer care, including financial cost and time for patients. The continuous education and awareness campaign would, in the long run, have an impact on the time to presentation by giving hope to patients.
Some of our past and recurring projects include:
Cancer campaigns in local hospitals and markets.
We conduct bi-monthly cancer awareness campaigns in Lagos, Nigeria, educating people about common cancers, the importance of early diagnosis, and how to prevent cancer. Since up to 50% of cancer cases in developing countries are preventable, we also provide free cancer screening programmes.
To ensure that everyone is educated about cancer, we conduct several campaigns in local markets using native languages.
Cancer awareness and Screening programmes.
Annual webinar with HealthCare International (HCI), one of the foremost health insurance companies in Nigeria. The webinars include education on healthy lifestyles, cancer prevention, and treatment. We address myths about cancer and engage in conversations about how this reduces participation in appropriate cancer treatment, as well as the role of health insurance coverage in reducing the financial burden of cancer care.
Facebook education sessions with Q&As.
HiT Supported Cancer Care (HSCC) Units
Considering the rising number of cancer cases and deaths in Africa, we are partnering with local teams at University Teaching Hospitals to establish an Integrated Cancer Clinic. Our focus here is on improving patient outcomes and access to cancer care from presentation to treatment. Through the formation of a one-stop integrated clinic, we aim to work closely with tertiary institutions. This initiative also includes regular cancer education and awareness campaigns and dedicated cancer nurses to support the clinic and patients. These clinics would also be a basis of data collection and local research, enabling better understanding of the cancer microenvironment and the risk factors in these communities
Annual 5K Cancer Walk
This achieves a dual purpose - fundraises as well as creates cancer awareness with the help of the organisation’s partners, sponsors and volunteers.
Fundraising
Through different campaigns and events, we raise money to help with cancer treatments since we are aware that access to care is limited in many countries due to a lack of funding.
Working with institutions like the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH), the funds raised are deposited directly into the institutions' bank accounts, in order to ensure transparency and accountability.
