Our Projects

We support a more definitive approach and pathway to cancer care. This is based on data that highlights, for instance, that despite breast cancer being the most prevalent cancer in Nigeria, there is insufficient access to its care, and many patients have advanced stages of the disease.

Our ongoing project, in conjunction with local teams in Teaching Hospitals in Nigeria, was carefully adapted to promote improved productivity, decrease the time to diagnosis and start of treatment, and support increased efficiency. It would also ensure a consistent multidisciplinary approach to cancer care as an integrated clinic, with breast cancer as the initial focus.

We aim to adapt an innovative approach to breast cancer management in Nigerian tertiary hospitals, with the goal of improving the process and outcomes of cancer care through the establishment of Integrated Cancer Clinics.

These integrated clinics would include a one-stop clinic for diagnosis, Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) evaluation, and facilitated treatment initiation, all under a dedicated clinic. Regular internal and external cancer awareness and education campaigns, nurse-led clinics for advice, and ongoing education would be incorporated into this program.

This intervention has the potential to improve patients' journeys from presentation to treatment and streamline care, targeting needs and resources while reducing the burden of cancer care, including financial cost and time for patients. The continuous education and awareness campaign would, in the long run, have an impact on the time to presentation by giving hope to patients.

Some of our past and recurring projects include:

Local Outreach

Cancer campaigns in local hospitals and markets.

We conduct bi-monthly cancer awareness campaigns in Lagos, Nigeria, educating people about common cancers, the importance of early diagnosis, and how to prevent cancer. Since up to 50% of cancer cases in developing countries are preventable, we also provide free cancer screening programmes.

To ensure that everyone is educated about cancer, we conduct several campaigns in local markets using native languages.

Cancer awareness and Screening programmes.

Annual webinar with HealthCare International (HCI), one of the foremost health insurance companies in Nigeria. The webinars include education on healthy lifestyles, cancer prevention, and treatment. We address myths about cancer and engage in conversations about how this reduces participation in appropriate cancer treatment, as well as the role of health insurance coverage in reducing the financial burden of cancer care.

Facebook education sessions with Q&As.

HiT Supported Cancer Care (HSCC) Units

Considering the rising number of cancer cases and deaths in Africa, we are partnering with local teams at University Teaching Hospitals to establish an Integrated Cancer Clinic. Our focus here is on improving patient outcomes and access to cancer care from presentation to treatment. Through the formation of a one-stop integrated clinic, we aim to work closely with tertiary institutions. This initiative also includes regular cancer education and awareness campaigns and dedicated cancer nurses to support the clinic and patients. These clinics would also be a basis of data collection and local research, enabling better understanding of the cancer microenvironment and the risk factors in these communities

Annual 5K Cancer Walk

This achieves a dual purpose - fundraises as well as creates cancer awareness with the help of the organisation’s partners, sponsors and volunteers.

Fundraising

Through different campaigns and events, we raise money to help with cancer treatments since we are aware that access to care is limited in many countries due to a lack of funding.

Working with institutions like the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH), the funds raised are deposited directly into the institutions' bank accounts, in order to ensure transparency and accountability.

  • "My younger sister was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma four years ago.

She experienced a relapse a year after completing her initial treatment and therefore required a specialist approach to achieve a more favourable outcome.

I learned about Help In Time (HIT) Consults through a friend, and I must say that their response was timely and impeccable. Through a series of e-consultations, HIT reviewed my sister's test results and provided us with their specialist second opinion. They also advised us on the best course of action for her treatment. HIT assisted us in selecting the most appropriate therapy, as my sister had previously undergone chemotherapy. Since then, my sister has commenced treatment and is progressing well.

HIT Consults has consistently monitored her progress while providing us with detailed, up-to-date information, including what to expect during her treatment. They have done this with great empathy and professionalism.

Considering that cancer may have a genetic link, HIT also recommended the types of cancer screening tests that we, as family members, should undergo for the proper maintenance of our health. Thank you, Help in Time Consults, for all that you do!"

  • "My name is Chioma Abhala, a 36-year-old mother of two. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020, which had significant financial, physical, mental, and other impacts on me.

Due to a lack of care, the cancer spread to my spine, lungs, and my other breast. With the support of my family, friends, and my brothers in Christ, I started treatment at LUTH. I've undergone six chemotherapy sessions and surgery, but I became financially strained at this point and couldn't afford the scheduled radiotherapy.

Fortunately, while I was pondering how to proceed with my treatment, I received a call from Help In Time Consults. To the glory of God, they provided financial support for my radiotherapy treatment with the sum of 250,000 Naira.

I just want to express my gratitude to Help In Time Consults for deeming me worthy of assistance. God bless your team and sponsors. My deepest thanks to God Almighty."

  • "Hello everyone, I would like to talk about my cancer journey so far and how Help In Time Consults has supported me. I also want to let people know that early detection is key in battling cancer. I am a 30-year-old breast cancer survivor living in Lagos. I have gone through a lot to survive this disease called breast cancer.

First, I'd like to encourage women to always examine their breasts regularly, and if they find any lumps, they should see the doctor immediately.

In my case, I actually noticed the lump, but I thought it was similar to something I experienced a few years back, which I had removed, so I didn't take it seriously. Unfortunately, it turned out to be this life-threatening breast cancer.

But fortunately for me, during my radiotherapy stage, I learned about Help In Time Consults from my doctor at LUTH-NSIA Cancer Centre, where I was receiving treatment. Help In Time was so kind and helpful, just as their name suggests, and they showed up just in time when I needed help the most. They supported me with the sum of 200,000 Naira to complete my pending radiotherapy treatment.

I was so happy because this support was so relieving. I never thought there was an NGO in Nigeria that could be so prompt to support me with such an amount just like that; seriously, it was mind-blowing for me. I'm so grateful to them.

I want to sincerely thank their sponsors for reaching out to me through Help In Time Consults, and I also plead that you keep supporting them so they can reach more cancer patients like me. Cancer treatment is so expensive in this part of the world, and because of this, so many beautiful people have lost their lives.

Once again, thank you Help In Time, and thank you, dear sponsors.

    God bless you all."

    - Miss A. I., Breast Cancer Survivor, May 2022

  • "I sincerely appreciate the support that was provided for the urgent treatment of my 6-year-old daughter.

The ₦100,000 that was sent was used to buy platelets from six different people (6 packs) at ₦10,500 each. Filgrastim (Neupogen) was purchased to boost her white blood cell count, which was at 0.87 at the time. It was bought for ₦28,000, while ₦7,000 was used for a blood culture test to enable the doctors to determine the type of antibiotics to administer.

A total of ₦98,000 was spent.

Although her platelet count is still low, the doctors have suggested that we obtain a platelet donation from an individual, which will cost ₦300,000.

I sincerely appreciate your support so far.

    God bless you all."

    - Mrs Nkwocha, Lagos for Miss Chijioke Nkwocha, Cancer Of The Kidney, June 2022

  • "I would like to express my gratitude to HIT Consults for the financial support they provided for my treatment.

They reached out to me through NSIA-LUTH, offering to cover the cost of two of my treatment cycles, amounting to ₦111,020.

As promised, they transferred the money to NSIA-LUTH, allowing me to proceed with my treatment. My sincere appreciation goes to God Almighty and all the sponsors of HIT Consults.

    God bless you."
